The farm’s hydrangea crop grows in size and variety monthly over the summer. Whether at a flea market vendor, nursery or hand me down plant from a family member – they’re scooped up and planted here and there. Annabelle’s, Incrediballs, Niko Blues there is none that my hands can say no to. I wait patiently for the flowers to sprout up and burst with color and slowly change on the stem through autumn with faded greens or dramatic hot pinks.

It’s the last farewell of summer. All of our hydrangeas, were very prolific this year.

Don’t we all love flowers that are dramatic and require no water in their vase. I was at a store this weekend with tons of fake flowers to choose from. Why spend the money? Get yourself a hydrangea bush and you can have flowers fresh and dried.

I stick them inside grapevine wreaths, antiques, sap pails and baskets. The perfect accompaniment to the cozy time of autumn. You can find many of the perennials on sale starting in September. I picked up two at local nurseries. I’ve never had one die so fingers crossed that they’ll be just fine.
