I’ve always been drawn to big, open skies—the kind that stretch endlessly, whether filled with dramatic, gathering clouds or washed clean in quiet blue. There’s something grounding about them. They hold movement and stillness at the same time, reminding me to slow down, look up, and breathe.
This original oil painting is an alla prima landscape study, capturing the quiet movement of summer clouds drifting over layered green fields. Painted wet-into-wet, the brushwork remains loose and expressive, allowing color and light to mingle naturally on the surface. Soft cloud forms balance against deeper greens and sunlit passages, evoking a moment of stillness just before the air shifts. The piece reflects a contemplative connection to the land—unhurried, grounded, and gently atmospheric.
That sense of anticipation—of weather changing, of land responding—is what I return to again and again in my landscapes. They’re not about grand moments, but about connection: to the land, to the sky, and to the subtle shifts that often go unnoticed.
As I worked, a small story unfolded in my mind.
Julia’s heart raced as ominous clouds gathered overhead, signaling an impending summer thunderstorm. Julia sprinted across the meadow, warning the gathering summer clouds to “Keep Quiet!” The air crackled with tension as the first raindrops fell. Julia, fueled by urgency, finally arrived, breathless but relieved and not completely drenched. She relaxed on her porch and was thankful the pumpkins in the field would get some much-needed water.
