From Preservation to Pantry Organization
Mason jars have been a household staple since John Landis Mason first invented them in 1858 for preserving food. These jars were a vital tool in food storage, but today, they’ve evolved into versatile collectibles used in endless creative ways. Growing up, Ball jars were everywhere in our home. My mom had a large garden at one point, preserving everything imaginable, but my favorite was her grape juice phase—those jars were packed with deep, beautiful purple juice!
These days, I use mason jars to organize my pantry, filling them with pasta, cereal, and chocolate chips. Not only do they keep spices and grains fresh, but they also make it easy to see what’s on hand.
If you’re on the hunt for collectible mason jars, here are some gems to look out for:
- Black Glass Jars: The most sought-after by collectors.
- Ball Blue Jars: A light blue shade that’s still popular today.
- Milk Glass, Amber, and Green Jars: These rare colors make for unique finds!
Whether you use them for preserving or pantry storage, mason jars add a rustic charm and timeless function to any space. What’s your favorite way to use them?

Great collection shown here! I use mason jars for craft storage and as lanterns for holding candles. 🙂
