When we moved in during our first spring, I planted four heirloom roses in my garden. However, one of them has remained a mystery. Despite having tags for Smile (Clesmile), Alba Semi Plena, Belle Isis, and Golden Blush, none seem to match this particular rose. This mystery rose has since taken over the entire garden.
Though I don’t know its name, it signifies the arrival of summer for me. It’s the first vibrant burst of color in my garden each year. By the end of May, its buds start to open, releasing a subtle clove fragrance as you pass by. This week, it finally bloomed, marking the beginning of summer with 200-300 blossoms. Its reddish-copper rose hips add color throughout the winter.
After its June bloom, I’ll be doing some serious pruning—although I’m a bit nervous about it! Bruce is worried it might overrun us if I don’t. If you have any ideas on what this rose might be called, please let me know.
Off to tame the garden beasts!
